ENVIS CENTRE on Floral diversity in the Botanical Survey of
India, Howrah funded by the Ministry of Environment & Forests,
Government of India is engaged in meeting the task of disseminating
information on Floral diversity including the Rare and Endangered plants
to the wide range of users through the vast infrastructural facilities and
experienced Scientists of the Botanical Survey of India.
ESTABLISHMENT:
Ministry of Environment & Forests vide their letter No.4 (25)/83-ENVIS, dated 18th March, 1994 approved setting up of an Environmental Information Systems (ENVIS) Centre on “Plant Ecology” at Industrial Section Indian Museum, Botanical Survey of India, Calcutta – 16. Since then ENVIS Centre is working on different Project title as allotted by the Ministry. From November 2002 this center has been shifted to Central National Herbarium, 3rd Floor, Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah – 711 103 and presently engaged on preparing database on ‘Floral Diversity’ of India. OBJECTIVES : The main objectives of the centre are to collect and store data on various Floral diversities from different eco-regions of India. Economic and Medicinal plants, plants that are used largely for sustainable development, cottage industries, food products and plants that are in the categories of rare and endangered. All these processed information are disseminated as much as possible through an appropriate database to the different users nationally and internationally and to create an interlink by computer network. Every year the centre receives various national and international queries on these regards for appropriate answer.
