Botanical Survey of India ---- Objectives

 

Botanical survey of India was established in 1890 with the basic objective of carrying out Floristic Surveys.

 It was revived and reorganized in 1954. During the successive plan periods it functions have been gradually

Expanded. The Objective and perspective of BSI were thoroughly revised.

 

 

 

FLORA OF INDIA: --- No other organization is involved in it !!

 

  • Published 10 vol.s and 24 Fascicles of Flora of India.

  • Completed State Flora of 20 States in 30 vol.s

  • Published Flora of 30 Districts in 37 Vols.

 

The only custodian in the country for typed specimens

 

  • Discover 800 new species/varieties/new Genera and 1700 new records of Plants of India.

 

 Complete Inventory of exiting phytodiversity authenticated with specimens

 

Custodian of biggest herbarium of South East Asia.

  • Maintains 12 Herbaria (Over 3 millions of specimens) 12 museum over 40 thousand exhibits of plants products and 12 libraries ( over 3.5 lakhs volumes of books and journals)

 

Established NATIONAL DATABASE of typed specimen of BSI Herbaria

 

 

BSI is the Authority which identifies the depleading plant resources and recommends conservation

 

  • BSI is the custodian of largest outdoor labs in the form of Botanical Garden for Conservation and Experimental work.

 

  • Conserve about 400 rare, endemic and threatened species in the gardens of BSI as part of Ex-situ conservation

.

  • Identified about 1500 threatened species and published 3 vol.s of RED DATA BOOKs on Indian Plants, Vol. 3 and Vol.5 in press.

 

 

BSI is the organization engaged in documentation of ethnic traditional knowledge on plant resources.

  • Ethno botanical studies in 114 tribal areas in 72 districts of 11 states and information of over 500 species of plants used as food,fauder,fueel,fiber,medicines,dyes,resin etc.databased

 

BSI is the centre of the largest collection of taxonomic literature for pre Linnaean and post Linnaean literatures and protologues.

 

 

Collaborates with National and International Institutes

 

  • Provides information on Indian Plants in CITES, National Biodiversity Action Plan and negative list of imports.

 

  • Guide students for Ph.D. degree and trained students and in-services personnel on herbarium technique and methodology

.

  • Engaged on Floristic Survey for Environmental impact assessment study for developmental projects.

 

  • Published about 400 books and more than 5000 research papers.
